The First Dance

There are many magical moments in a wedding: the walk down the aisle, the first kiss, the grand entrance. None are any more enchanting though than the first dance which, when done to perfection, can be a lifetime lasting memory, for both you, your spouse and your guests. Below is a critique of the good, the great and the down right ugly of this milestone event. Let's start with:

The Good, but . . .

On the surface this looks like a good first dance for this couple, but lets look closer. Notice the noise level in the background, which indicates most people are not paying attention - or were  even made aware - that the first dance was taking place. Notice also the guests moving around in the background and that the wait staff is still clearing the tables from dinner.

Clearly this is not the defining moment that this couple probably envisioned. And this is one reason why I personally do not like to have the first dance done immediately following the meal.

This one is better. Our Bride and Groom obviously have the attention of all of their guests and are in the moment - but what is up with all of the flashing lights? For this moment the DJ should be using a more subtle, slow motion lighting effect. If none are available, no lights at all are a better option. I'm guessing any professional photographer would kill this guy right about now.

I love the song choice here (Just Like Heaven/Katie Melua) but this couple - particularly the bride - does not seem to be quite in the moment. She's carrying on small talk and waving to the camera while sharing her first dance as husband and wife.
"Weddings are mostly about emotions," says Sacramento DJ Randy Bartlett. "If you can get the guests to feel the emotion you can take them anywhere you want them to go."

Certainly this couple is not building any emotion or memorable moments. I'd be surprised to see a lot of guests coming to the dance floor after this one.

The Hall of Famers

What I love about this one: the energy builds from the moment this couple walks thru the door. They go directly into their dance while everyones eyes are fixiated on them. It's apparent they spent a little time preparing for this one.

This is probably my personal favorite. Can you just feel the love between these two? Great video editing by the videographer as well!

Your Blue Ribbon winner! I'm not sure how many banquet facilities would allow all of the special effects (bubbles, fog, confetti), that this first dance utilizes, but this is as well put together as a Broadway production. Definitely one every one of their guests will remember for a lifetime.
Notice even the blue architectural lights in the background contributing to the mood.
*Disclaimer: We do not actually own all of the effects used in this dance

And finally . . .

The Down Right Ugly

Every couples worst nightmare. Do not adjust your volume. That one minute, three seconds of complete dead silence is actually a part of this awkward moment, and if you can make it thru all two and a half minutes of this video you probably have a high threshhold for pain. Hopefully the rest of the reception went better for this couple.

               And this just in -
This is why your DJ should buy the music rather than depending on streaming it!

The Difference?

What the difference between making that first dance either a magical moment or a forgotten conclusion?

          - Preparaton
          - Placement
          - Set Up

What else can we tell you about creating monumental an memorable wedding receptions?
